Trichology

What is Trichology?

Trichology is the scientific study of the hair and scalp. It stems from the Greek word 'trichos', meaning 'hair' and the suffix 'ology', which means 'the study of'. A trichologist specialises in all matters relating to hair and scalp health. Trichology, like other scientific specialisms, takes a holistic approach to treatment, which involves taking into account lifestyle, diet and wellbeing as a whole, as well as the signs and symptoms present.

Philip Kingsley trichologists are concerned with treating and addressing both the medical and cosmetic side of the hair and scalp. This ranges from severe hair and scalp disorders, such as scarring alopecia and alopecia areata, to your hairs' general condition, texture, health and appearance.

At the Philip Kingsley Clinics in London and New York, all of our trichologists are board certified members of the Institute of Trichologists, with 3 of our trichologists having achieved fellowships. This is the most prestigious honour a trichologist can achieve and is reserved only for the best of those in the field.

Hair is an incredibly sensitive barometer of both the bodies' internal and external environment. Therefore, in order to become a Member of The Institute of Trichologists, and a Philip Kingsley trichologist, one must have studied anatomy & physiology, genetic inheritance, microbiology, microscopy, nutrition and chemistry, as well as the hair and scalp, in order to qualify.
